2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined game identity.

The president noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Hires

This announcement follows a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire text from Ismailer's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a clearer vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, Ben officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming field is vast, having spent the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most popular series in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 together with a public demo. Initially, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Take on the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that change every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The choice is in your hands."

Project Ethos does not have an confirmed debut schedule or consoles, but fans can anticipate additional details as creation advances.
