A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
