Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
