RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
