The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
