Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
