The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
