Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
